Description
You are acquiring the pictured HK-589 medallisted by Messers. Hibler and Kappen in their book titled "So-Called Dollars.
This is also what is termed a National Commemorative Medal that was created by public law and struck by the United States Mint at Philadelphia.
This example is bright, flashy red and very BU. Note the telegraph wires in the background of obverse. They are telling the tale of the Pony Express' demise and were cleverly included in the design.
On the reverse, that giant hitching post thing in the foreground is actually a Telegraph Key which the designer juxtaposed against the horse, the former being the transmission key to messages for the telegraph while the latter being the mode of transmission by the Pony Express.
