Description
Old Antique Vintage Chinese Cobalt Blue Incense Burner 3 Knob Design.I can tell you only what I know about this piece from direct experience. Purchased in 1991 in Chengdu,
Sichuan Province, at the locally well known "swimming pool" antiques market. At the time, many antiques
were making their way in from the countryside. There was no enormous market for fake
ceramics in those
early years as it was hard enough to find people to buy the real antiques and vintage
items available at
the market. I do not know the age of this censer.
There is a great deal of wear to the glaze on the bottom third of the censer. The item does not actually rest
flat on the 3 knobs near the base. Instead, it rests on its flat base. The piece appears to have been made for
some kind of a "support" that the knobs
could rest upon. Given the wear to the glaze, the
support must
have rubbed against the censer
to have the glaze exhibit such wear. Please note
the pictures that show the rim of this censer was
separately attached to the piece. It is not a fully thrown
piece in which the rim
was shaped in the throw. The rim appears to
have been added after the pot was
thrown. This construction
resulted in a distinct inner rim edge as well as
one outer indentation. I have
tried
to photograph these
areas. If you need more photos, just let
me know.
Also, pay particular attention to the photograph that shows a
white spot in the blue glaze. This
may or may not be a kiln flaw. It may be a tiny chip in the glaze. There are actually a few more of these
white areas but they are tiny and hard to photograph clearly. If you want a photograph of them, however,
please
just let me know and I will send one.
The censer weighs about 2 pounds 7 ounces. It is a heavy ceramic piece that has seen much use over the
years. The glaze is uneven on the outside ( lighter in some places than others). There are kiln flaws,
which
are mostly on interior of the piece. Upon visual inspection, there are no other chips or cracks.
The censer is about 7.75" in diameter. It stands about 3.5" high.
