    Description

Souvenir of the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition held in Portland, Oregon.  This a non-dated version of the Government Building Dollar struck by Meyer Bros., presumably prior to the Expo.  Closest to HK-333 or SH 14-2, this appears to be a slightly different Obverse die than shown in either, as Clark's features are just slightly different in the set of his mouth (however, not as grim as the so-called "Stern Head" die). 34mm, plain edge, 15.2 grams, so subtly smaller than SH 14-2 as listed in Shevlin.  This is also Gold-plated but this appears to have been done after the fact.  There are minor signs of wear, marks and a small rim bump, indicating this was carried in a pocket for some time prior to being plated.  It is possible that this was Gilt as issued (what Shevlin calls "Gold-plated") and gold-plated later by the owner to replace lost gilding.  Some light hairlines which occurred after being Gold-plated.  I am located less than 100 miles from where the event took place, and have never seen another, in 30 years of dealing in the Northwest, so presumably quite scarce.  Certainly worthy of research by a dedicated L&C specialist.
